Rubber & Elastomer Testing Machines
Universal testing machines configured for tensile, tear, compression set and hardness testing of vulcanised rubber, thermoplastic elastomers and silicones.

Mechanical Testing of Rubber and Elastomers
High-elongation tensile, tear resistance and compression set testing — optimised for the unique demands of elastomeric materials.
Rubber and elastomers present unique testing challenges: extremely high elongation (500%+), low forces, viscoelastic behaviour and sensitivity to grip clamping. Cermac’s UTM-D (0.1–20 kN) delivers the precise speed control, sensitive load measurement and specialised grips needed for reliable rubber testing.
Combined with the X-Sight video extensometer for non-contact strain measurement on high-elongation specimens, the system provides accurate stress-strain curves without the limitations of mechanical clip-on extensometers.
Rubber Testing Features
High Elongation Capability
Crosshead travel accommodates 500%+ elongation typical of elastomeric materials.
Video Extensometer
Non-contact strain measurement via X-Sight DIC for accurate high-elongation curves.
Pneumatic Grips
Constant clamping force prevents specimen slippage without over-compression at the jaws.
Low-force Sensitivity
Class 0.5 accuracy at forces as low as 1 N for thin rubber films and O-rings.
Multi-test Capability
Tensile, tear, compression set, stress relaxation and hardness on the same platform.
Standard Calculations
Automatic tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus at 100/200/300% and tear strength.
Testing Standards
Tensile properties of vulcanised and thermoplastic rubbers.
Tear strength of vulcanised rubber — trouser, angle and crescent specimens.
Compression set of rubber at ambient and elevated temperatures.
Compression stress-strain properties of rubber.
Compression properties of rubber in compression.
Rebound resilience of rubber — pendulum method.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is video extensometry preferred for rubber?
Rubber elongates 500% or more — far beyond the range of mechanical clip-on extensometers. Video extensometry tracks strain optically without physical contact.
What grip type is best for rubber?
Pneumatic grips with flat rubber-coated faces provide consistent clamping without cutting into the specimen.
Can the same machine test plastics too?
Yes. The UTM-D handles both rubber (ISO 37) and plastics (ISO 527) by changing grips and speed settings.
What about compression set testing?
Compression set fixtures are available as accessories for the UTM-D, per ISO 815 and ASTM D395.
